This mufti-faceted approach ...Great post, Louis.

This mufti-faceted approach to subtitles/program reminds me of cubist painting--something with which Milhaud would have been familiar. How the work is received depends on what you are looking for as much as the angle approached.

-ryan-Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6464483192473464743.post-66940250414784181542011-08-19T16:43:16.483-04:002011-08-19T16:43:16.483-04:00I really like your gimmick and think it works real...I really like your gimmick and think it works really well for the different facets of the piece. RE: which of the three subtitles works best, I'd say that since each has its own territory - roughly, "post-neoclassical" has to do with aesthetics/historiography; "deliverance" with biography; "American" with performance context - the kind of subtitle you prefer probably says a lot about which KIND of backstory you are likely to find most interesting and compelling, maybe even more so than how closely related you judge the sounds and the frame to be.Emily RPhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09384650592584808816noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6464483192473464743.post-87877732489031054112011-08-17T14:32:27.094-04:002011-08-17T14:32:27.094-04:00Great post -- it's amazing how different these...Great post -- it's amazing how different these excerpts sound depending on what subtitle you come in thinking about. I think we should do this kind of thing with more symphonies (and everything else). I also think too often we try to argue that one subtitle -- or whatever frame -- is the "right" one, when really, the enlightening stuff happens when we think about the new insights that different frames offer us.Mugshothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04118832685122190192noreply@blogger.com
